Building Second Chances: Construction Employer Engagement at HMP Moorland

On 17th November, HMP Moorland hosted a highly successful Construction Employer Engagement Event in collaboration with Galliford Try, aimed at connecting skilled and motivated individuals within the prison population to potential employment opportunities in the construction sector.

The event brought together leading employers and key supply chain partners, creating a platform for meaningful dialogue about careers in construction and the value of second chances. It was well attended by men who are due for release in the coming weeks and months, many of whom possess valuable experience and qualifications or a strong eagerness to learn new skills.

Rebecca Caunce, Corporate Responsibility Manager at Galliford Try, emphasized the importance of such initiatives:

“Taking part in these events are really important to us. We are an industry facing a growing skills shortage and the prison population presents a high number of experienced/qualified construction professionals as well as new entrants with an eagerness to learn. The event we held with Morgan at HMP Moorlands brought in our key supply chain partners too, to introduce smaller local businesses to this potential recruitment avenue. The event was well attended and well organised and showcased the talent we should all be tapping into. We are hopeful some of the men we met yesterday will gain opportunities upon their imminent release and we look forward to working with Morgan and the wider prison estate into 2026.”

The event was praised for its organization and impact, with employers from a variety of industries engaging directly with attendees. Chris Armitage, Social Value Manager at Caval, shared his reflections:

“It’s always good to come into prisons as it serves as a reminder there are some great skills on show and we would be missing a trick if we do not engage with the prisoners who are so keen to get back into the workplace on their release. Thanks again to Rebecca Caunce and Morgan Powell for putting on this great showcase of talent.”

This initiative highlights the growing recognition within the construction industry of the benefits of inclusive recruitment practices. By tapping into this overlooked talent pool, employers not only address skills shortages but also contribute to reducing reoffending through sustainable employment.

The success of the event at HMP Moorland sets a strong precedent for future collaborations, reinforcing the message that second chances can build stronger communities and a stronger workforce.
